Are You Like a Kid in a Consumer Candy Shop?
January 30th, 2010So often have I walked into Lowes or Best Buy feeling like a kid in a candy shop – like all connection with reality was suspended, and I just wanted and had to have (fill in the blank). We have dropped thousands of dollars, much on credit cards, at stores like that.
That’s why I was feeling pretty smug the time that we were able to purchase a new washing machine at a discount. Checking out partially with a store card from a previous return, I only had to pay $57 out of pocket, and I was almost gloating. When I got home, I was still in a euphoric haze and actually said, “How can they stay in business with customers like us?” My husband looked meaningfully at our Kraftmaid cabinets, and quartz counter tops, and stainless steel appliances. “Oh,” I said. Thousands of dollars… paying for them over and over via credit card bills…
So I came up with this little cartoon to remind myself exactly what temptation I’m getting into when we enter those doors:

All I can say is, if you have any doubts about your own self-control, just don’t go there. When you’re debt-free, you’ll thank yourself.
