Make Your Own Chocolate Syrup – Save Money

February 17th, 2010

You can save money by making your own Hershey’s chocolate syrup.

Chocolate syrup, especially Hershey’s syrup, seems to be a staple in our house.  Some members of our family who shall remain nameless do not like to eat ice cream unless there is syrup on it.  And another member of our household cannot live without chocolate milk.  While it generally is a decent deal (here in Wisconsin at least) to buy the chocolate milk by the gallon already made up, sometimes we run out, and then we resort to making it with syrup.  So we do like to keep chocolate syrup on hand.

However, I do not think I will ever pay $2.59 to buy Hershey’s syrup again.  It is so easy to make your own!  Most of us have cocoa powder in our pantries for use in baking or cooking.  If not, pick some up for $3.49.  You only need 1/4 cup of powder + 2 cups sugar + 1 cup of water, a little vanilla, and a little salt to make your own syrup.  I don’t know exactly how many batches you can get out of a can – maybe 4 or 5?

And then you can reuse an empty honey bear bottle for your homemade syrup!
