Making Your Own Bathroom Cleaner
January 30th, 2010It’s possible to save money on cleaning products, and go “green” if you so desire, without spending excessive money.
Here are some simple ways you can scour, scrub, and disinfect your bathroom without buying pre-packaged, costly cleaning products. (I recommend, however, that you compare the prices of these ingredients against the dollar store or store brand cleaners.)
In the bathroom, you can use:
- plaing old baking soda for scouring or spot removal
- a wipe-down of vinegar followed by scouring with baking soda for big messes/stubborn stains
- vinegar for disinfecting (maybe keep a spray bottle filled with vinegar for this purpose)
- vinegar for scrubbing toilet – spritz the inside of the bowl with several squirts of vinegar, swish and scrub with the toilet brush. You can also spray and wipe down the outside of the tank and the seat with straight vinegar. Might want the bathroom fan running for this one though!
- your homemade glass cleaner or a homemade all-purpose cleaner for a daily wipe-down
Here’s a recipe for a Homemade All-Purpose Cleaner:
- 1 part vinegar
- 1 part rubbing alcohol
- 3 parts water
- 3-4 drops of liquid dish soap
You can add a few drops of essential oil (i.e. orange oil or lemon oil) for scent. Orange, lemon and tea tree oil can all help with disinfecting as well.
You don’t need the super strong store-bought disinfectants in the bathroom, that’s all marketing. When you are focused on financial goals, breaking with habit and trying something new, like homemade bathroom cleaners, may be a wise idea.
